US12716674 - Mortar training system for simulated firing

The patent describes a mortar training system that simulates the firing of inert mortar projectiles using a barrel body equipped with a shot detector and orientation sensors to provide electronic feedback on the firing event. The system includes a firing pin mechanism that releases pressurized gas to simulate the projectile’s launch, enhancing training accuracy and effectiveness.
Claim 1
1 . A simulation system for simulating firing of a mortar bomb, the simulation system comprising: a mortar training device, comprising: a barrel body comprising a bore and a firing pin extending longitudinally through the bore; a shot detector contained in the barrel body and comprising a shot detection sensor and configured to output an electronic signal indicating a firing of an inert mortar projectile from the barrel body, wherein the shot detector further comprises a longitudinal channel configured to receive the firing pin; a battery; a plurality of orientation sensors contained in the barrel body; and a trigger configured to move the firing pin longitudinally along the bore between a first position and a second position, wherein an end of the firing pin is retracted below an opening of the longitudinal channel in the shot detector in the first position and the end of the firing pin extends past the opening of the longitudinal channel in the shot detector in the second position; and the inert mortar projectile comprising a pressurized gas, wherein the firing pin is configured to release the pressurized gas from the inert mortar projectile to fire the inert mortar projectile from the barrel body when the firing pin is in the second position. a mortar training device, comprising: a barrel body comprising a bore and a firing pin extending longitudinally through the bore; a shot detector contained in the barrel body and comprising a shot detection sensor and configured to output an electronic signal indicating a firing of an inert mortar projectile from the barrel body, wherein the shot detector further comprises a longitudinal channel configured to receive the firing pin; a battery; a plurality of orientation sensors contained in the barrel body; and a trigger configured to move the firing pin longitudinally along the bore between a first position and a second position, wherein an end of the firing pin is retracted below an opening of the longitudinal channel in the shot detector in the first position and the end of the firing pin extends past the opening of the longitudinal channel in the shot detector in the second position; and the inert mortar projectile comprising a pressurized gas, wherein the firing pin is configured to release the pressurized gas from the inert mortar projectile to fire the inert mortar projectile from the barrel body when the firing pin is in the second position.
