The patent describes protective shields designed to prevent projectile impacts during excavating and mining operations, utilizing a combination of transparent polycarbonate layers with an air gap for enhanced protection. The shield features a first polycarbonate layer with a specific surface coating and frit area, secured to a sacrificial polycarbonate layer, creating an air gap that contributes to its protective capabilities.
Claim 1
1 . A protective shield, comprising: a first polycarbonate layer having a first surface coating and defining a first frit area in which the first surface coating is absent; a sacrificial polycarbonate layer having a second surface coating and defining a second frit area in which the second surface coating is absent; and wherein the first frit area of the first polycarbonate layer is secured to the second frit area of the sacrificial polycarbonate layer such that an air gap is defined between the first polycarbonate layer and the second polycarbonate layer when so secured. a first polycarbonate layer having a first surface coating and defining a first frit area in which the first surface coating is absent; a sacrificial polycarbonate layer having a second surface coating and defining a second frit area in which the second surface coating is absent; and wherein the first frit area of the first polycarbonate layer is secured to the second frit area of the sacrificial polycarbonate layer such that an air gap is defined between the first polycarbonate layer and the second polycarbonate layer when so secured. wherein the first frit area of the first polycarbonate layer is secured to the second frit area of the sacrificial polycarbonate layer such that an air gap is defined between the first polycarbonate layer and the second polycarbonate layer when so secured.
