US12281886 - Methods for rendering safe devices containing explosives

The patent describes a method for safely neutralizing Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) using a powered mechanical press that identifies, classifies, and positions the IED before applying a fracturing device. After the IED is fractured, the method includes the removal of both the fractured device and its explosive contents.
Claim 1
- A method for rendering safe an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) comprising: identifying and classifying the IED; selecting one of a plurality of platforms based on the type of IED and securing the selected platform to a powered mechanical press; placing the IED into the powered mechanical press and positioning the IED within the press based on the classification of the IED; selecting one of a plurality of fracturing devices based on the type of IED and securing the selected fracturing device to the powered mechanical press; activating the press until the fracturing device of the press reaches a fracture position with respect to the IED; holding the position of the press for a predetermined period of time when the fracturing device reaches the fracture position; and removing, after the IED has fractured, the fractured IED from the press and explosive filler from the fractured IED. identifying and classifying the IED; selecting one of a plurality of platforms based on the type of IED and securing the selected platform to a powered mechanical press; placing the IED into the powered mechanical press and positioning the IED within the press based on the classification of the IED; selecting one of a plurality of fracturing devices based on the type of IED and securing the selected fracturing device to the powered mechanical press; activating the press until the fracturing device of the press reaches a fracture position with respect to the IED; holding the position of the press for a predetermined period of time when the fracturing device reaches the fracture position; and removing, after the IED has fractured, the fractured IED from the press and explosive filler from the fractured IED.
